Client: Sol de Montserrat
Handcrafted Handbags
Brand Summary:
Sol de Montserrat sells handcrafted handbags from Colombia that can be worn at formal events or on vacation. The indigenous designs and patterns appeal to those who appreciate culture, travel and fashion.
Creative Brief:
Design a logo that blends luxury and Colombian culture.
Create a brand name that incorporates "Montserrat" into it.
Naming:
The client came up with the name “Montserrat” which is a reference to Monserrate, a famous mountain in Bogotá, Colombia, where she is from. The alternate spelling is taken from the original Catalan mountain, Montserrat, in Spain.
However, there were multiple brands using “Montserrat” so we decided to add something to the name that would help differentiate it, while keeping the name short as possible.
During our brainstorming session, I researched the history of Montserrat for inspiration. It was considered sacred by the indigenous Muisca because of its special relationship with the Sun. During the June solstice, the sun rises exactly from behind Monserrate.
It was then that the name rose into existence,
Sol de Montserrat.

Logo design:
The client requested the design of a traditional Colombian hat, the sombrero vueltiao, be incorporated into the logo. They also wanted the logo to be round, like the sombrero.
The rings of the hat could be used with the sun shape to create a circular design. In the center of the hat is a pattern of triangles. These were used to create a new design, an abstract mountain. The downward facing triangle represents the top of the mountain, where the famous Monserrate Monastery resides. A simple circle was used to symbolize the sun rising over Monserrate on the June solstice.
